Wide Angle Living - even more amazing Bavarian Alps views!

join me for a hike near the spitzingsee about 60km south of munich, with more picturesque views and rolling panoramic scenes!

We really are spoilt for choice in Munich when it comes to hiking, Alpine lakes, and the great outdoors. With countless kilometres of hiking routes, trails, and mountain passes, there are always new places to discover. That being said, I always end up going back to some favourite spots, and the Sptizingsee is one of these. Apparently it is Bavaria’s largest mountain lake at 28 hectares, although it doesn’t feel very big compared to the mammoth Starnbergersee of Ammersee, supposedly these are not characterised as mountain lakes.

I did another post on the Spitzingsee as part of my ‘Bavaria on 35mm film’ series, you can check it out here, where I also document the cool old cable car that takes you up the mountain. All the shots in this current post were taken at the top of the cable car and along a 1 hour hike from there. I had my Linhof Technorama 617S camera and a roll of Kodak Gold 200 and a roll of Rollei Infrared film.

Below are the results - a larger monitor is highly advised!

Shot on top of the Taubenstein summit at 1,692m. Just to the left of the photo is a large cross, which would have made for a nice composition, however there were some annoying people whom I decided would be detrimental to my final image!

Shot along the hiking route. I can’t get enough of these panoramic shots!

I forgot to do a preview of the shot setup on this one, although it really is just “more rolling hills”, nothing overly special about this one.

The infrared shots

For some strange and unknown reason there is an overlap on this shot with another shot, as you can see from the very right of the image. Pity, as both images (setup of both below the final image) had a lot of potential. I think it is probably an unintentional double exposure actually.

Much better and “clean” shot on this one. I really like the strong infrared effect!

I nearly put this one as my blog cover shot (but I wanted a bit more colour on my front page!) - I really like how this one came out, in fact it is one of my favourite shots in a long time. I like how the wooden fence leads the way and sort of ends up in a line of trees in the middle of the shot and up towards the top right of the image.

I was intrigued but how the path (middle far distance) would come out in this composition, I think quite well.

overall observations

I really enjoyed this hike and I am really pleased with the results, even if two of the shots seemingly overlapped with each other, what a pity. But otherwise the infrared film “worked”, as it does not always seem to have the effect I am looking for. For the colour film I have been continuously pleased with Kodak Gold 200, although I will say it sometimes does have quite different colour profiles and I am not sure if this is something I am doing differently, or potentially due to my scanning settings. Either way, it has produced some really nice shots like the cover shot in this post.

I hope you enjoyed more breathtaking panoramic views and thanks for coming along for the ride!

See you next time!
