Wanting to practice more portrait style photography, I brought along my Hasselblad to an impromptu Frankfurt pub crawl, with surprisingly good results!
As if I did not have enough photography to be thinking about during any given week as part of my 52 rolls of film project, I have been wanting to practice more portrait style photography. Partly due to the success of my Bergger Pancro review (Week 27 of my project), but also because more and more I am enjoying this style of photography. And you all know the saying, 'practice makes perfect' - so off I went to an impromptu Frankfurt pub crawl armed with a few rolls of Kodak Portra 400.
This film is one of the most reliable films out there, a professional grade film used by wedding photographers worldwide. That being said, using this with my Hasselblad camera in a social environment is much more challenging. Not only because of the attention you get when you pull out a camera the size of a Hasselblad, but also because the lens shutter speed is relatively slow at 1/500th of a second for its fastest shutter speed. This means both planned or spontaneous shots become harder with less light as you have to use a slower shutter speed, increasing the chance of a blurry shot.
But on the whole, I was very happy with the shots that came back, and narrowed them down to the following ones.
My photography partner in crime in Frankfurt, Mr. Daniel Mas. Really good light in this shot.
More great light.
Kodak Portra 400 converted to black & white.
Such a happy man, Mr. Haardt.
This film is really versatile, but really comes into its own with good light.
After a few unsuccessful portrait shots I went for a semi-macro cocktail shot...
...and this is usually what happens after the cocktails come out. It's still quite a good shot despite the funny glasses and my dodgy focusing skills.
Really great viewing spot for the Frankfurt skyline.
Last shot of the roll, could be entitled "Drink my Guinness and there will be consequences"...!
